Christmas Tree Vandalized Hours After Lights Turned On | Village Shocked (2026)

A village’s beloved Christmas tree, which had illuminated the town for more than a decade, was felled just hours after its lights were switched on. The Shotton Colliery tree in County Durham was cut down between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving the community deeply distressed, according to Durham Police.

Officers believe the act was intentional vandalism and are seeking witnesses to come forward. Police Constable David Allan said, “This was a despicable, mindless act that has caused profound upset across the village at a time when we should be uniting in celebration. We’re treating this incident with utmost seriousness, and we will pursue the responsible individuals to the fullest extent permitted by law. This kind of conduct has no place in our community. Someone knows something—please help us identify who is responsible.”

For more information, Durham Police are requesting anyone with information, including CCTV or doorbell footage, to contact them.
