Jim Courier Debunks Tennis Calendar Complaints: 'There's More Offseason Than You Think'
Amid growing complaints about the packed tennis calendar, Jim Courier is stepping in to offer a different perspective. The former world No. 1 suggests that some of the criticism is unfounded, as players still have decent time to rest during the offseason.
On the Tennis Channel, Courier addressed Jack Draper's statement that six weeks off between seasons would be ideal. He noted that the Davis Cup Finals, the last official tournament of the season, ends on November 23rd, providing players with a six-week break before the new season begins. Additionally, since the Billie Jean King Cup Finals moved to October, the WTA season for top players effectively concluded last week with the WTA Finals.
Courier emphasized that there's more offseason than some realize. He explained, 'If you're a WTA top-100 player who didn't make the WTA Finals, you get 10 weeks off since the last mandatory event in Tokyo. For men, it's nine weeks off since the Paris Masters. The WTA finalists get two months off, and players like Jannik Sinner, who are currently playing but not in the Davis Cup Finals, have seven weeks off.'
Courier believes it's crucial to set the record straight, as facts are often loosely used in these discussions. He added, 'Players often argue that there's a very short gap between seasons, but we need to focus on the facts. Some of the harshest schedule critics include Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz from the ATP Tour, while Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina have been vocal about the issue in women's tennis.'
