NHRA Breaks Viewership Record: A New Era for Drag Racing? (2025)

The world of motorsports is buzzing with record-breaking viewership numbers! But this time, it's not the usual suspects leading the pack.

NHRA steals the spotlight: In a thrilling turn of events, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing NASCAR's audience for the first time. The Texas FallNationals on Fox captivated an astonishing 2.07 million viewers on average, with a peak of 3.63 million. This is a groundbreaking achievement, as it's the first NHRA broadcast to cross the 2 million viewer mark, leaving NASCAR's Las Vegas race in the dust.

But here's where it gets interesting: NHRA's success comes on the heels of a relatively modest 1.04 million viewers for the NHRA US Nationals in August. So, what caused this massive surge in interest?

Steve Reintjes, NHRA's VP of Broadcast, attributes the record-breaking numbers to an exceptional production team and their unwavering dedication to the sport. He also acknowledges the support of the Texas Motorplex and their partners at Fox Sports.

NASCAR's numbers: In contrast, NASCAR's Cup Series playoff race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway attracted 1.7 million viewers, a 10% increase from the previous weekend's race at Charlotte Roval. However, it's worth noting that last year's Las Vegas playoff race had higher viewership, but a direct comparison is challenging due to broadcasting channel differences.

As NASCAR's playoffs continue, the average viewership stands at 1.57 million, indicating a potential drop below the 2 million viewer mark for the season.

Down Under's Racing Fever: Across the globe, Australia's Bathurst 1000 also made headlines. The race attracted over 2 million viewers nationwide, with 1.54 million on the Seven Network and an additional 459,000 on Foxtel. Streaming services saw record-breaking numbers, with 211,000 viewers on 7Plus and 207 million minutes watched on Kayo Sports and Foxtel Now.

And this is the part most people miss: These viewership milestones are not just numbers; they reflect the growing popularity and global appeal of motorsports. It's a testament to the hard work of organizers, broadcasters, and the passionate fans who keep the adrenaline-pumping world of racing alive.

What do you think is the key to NHRA's sudden surge in popularity? Is it a one-off event or a sign of a shifting trend in motorsports viewership? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
