Philippine Airlines is set to transform its fleet with a series of exciting upgrades. The airline's flagship Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 jets will soon boast luxurious business class suites, mirroring the design of the upcoming Airbus A350-1000 fleet. This upgrade is part of a broader modernization program, with the first A350-1000 expected to arrive in the coming weeks, though the exact date remains uncertain. President Richard Nuttall confirms that the airline is awaiting the final delivery date from Airbus.
Philippine Airlines has ordered nine of these long-range A350s, which will serve key destinations in the United States and Canada, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto. The airline's focus on these routes highlights its commitment to connecting passengers to major hubs.
However, the upgrade to the 777 and A330 fleet won't commence until late 2027, according to Nuttall. This timeline is due to supply chain challenges, a common hurdle faced by the industry. The refurbishment program is estimated to cost $14-$15 million for the A330s, with the 777s requiring a slightly higher investment. Despite the substantial cost, Nuttall emphasizes that it's more cost-effective than purchasing new aircraft.
Additionally, Philippine Airlines is enhancing its single-aisle Airbus A321 jets with new business and economy seats. This upgrade aims to enhance the passenger experience across the Asia-Pacific region. The business class seats feature a 2-2 layout with an improved pitch of 45 inches and a deep 10-inch recline, offering a more comfortable journey. The economy cabin sacrifices five seats for enhanced comfort, maintaining a 30-inch pitch and 5-inch recline.
A notable improvement for passengers is the introduction of seatback video screens (13.3 inches in business and 10.1 inches in economy) and USB charging outlets, ensuring travelers stay entertained and connected during their flights. The A321s undergoing the upgrade this year will be followed by nine more in 2026 and the final six in 2027. These A321s are the 'classic' models, distinct from the lie-flat business class seats of the A321neo series.
Both the original and upgraded A321s will contribute to meeting the growing demand for domestic and regional flights, particularly in Cebu, which is being developed into a significant inter-island and international hub. Chief Operating Officer Carlos Luis Fernandez highlights the importance of expanding domestic services to support international routes.
