Catherine's First Speech in Two Years Advocates for Carer Dignity and Family Values
In her first public address since November 2023 and since her cancer diagnosis, the Princess of Wales has called for a renewed focus on dignity and respect for caregivers and family relationships. At the Future Workforce Summit in the City of London, she urged 80 top business leaders to prioritize employee well-being, including support for caregiving responsibilities.
The princess emphasized the importance of recognizing and valuing the often-unseen work of caring and loving, stating, "I believe in restoring the dignity to the quiet, often invisible work of caring, of loving well, as we look to build a happier, healthier society."
This speech marks a significant step in her return to public life, with a personal and powerful message about the need for kindness and the recognition of love as the foundation of healthy relationships. She highlighted the impact of early childhood experiences on adult well-being, stating, "The love we feel in our earliest years fundamentally shapes who we become and how we thrive as adults."
Catherine also addressed the business leaders, encouraging them to reconsider their priorities and create workplaces that value time, tenderness, and family support alongside productivity and success. She advocated for a more holistic approach to success, stating, "As business leaders, you will face the daily challenge of finding the balance between profitability and positive impact. But these two are not and should not be incompatible."
The event featured insights from Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, who discussed the long-term benefits of nurturing relationships in early childhood. Sir Gareth Southgate, the former England football manager, shared his experiences of managing players and the importance of trust and emotional security in family relationships.
This gathering was part of the Business Taskforce, a collaborative effort by the princess to gain business support for her campaign to recognize the significance of early childhood. The event showcased the commitment of companies like Aviva, NatWest Group, Iceland, Ikea, Lego, and Deloitte to this important initiative.
