Zanzibar's tourism industry has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing all expectations and setting a new record. By the end of October 2025, the island had welcomed over 743,000 international visitors, a staggering increase from previous years. This achievement is even more impressive considering the global challenges that have impacted tourism worldwide, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Despite these obstacles, Zanzibar's tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience, supported by strategic government reforms aimed at stabilizing and expanding the industry.
The data reveals a consistent and significant growth trend. In 2020, Zanzibar received 260,644 visitors, which gradually rose to 394,185 in 2021, 548,503 in 2022, 638,498 in 2023, and 736,755 in 2024. The 2025 total has already exceeded these figures, with two months of data yet to be included. The monthly arrivals for 2025 showcase a steady increase, with January recording 84,069 visitors, February 82,750, and March 60,345. The mid-year peak saw a sharp rise, with July attracting 98,370 visitors, August 105,506, and September 84,154, each representing substantial year-on-year growth.
Arif Abbas, Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Commission of Tourism, attributes this success to the government's efforts. He highlights the improvements in the investment climate, modernization of infrastructure, and enhanced service standards, which have collectively contributed to Zanzibar's competitiveness in the international tourism market. Abbas also emphasizes the introduction of direct flights, a significant outcome of the African Aviation Development Conference (AVIADEV), which has improved accessibility from various global destinations, further fueling the surge in tourist arrivals.
The tourism sector's diversification has played a pivotal role in its growth. Zanzibar has expanded its offerings to include Sports Tourism, Halal Tourism, Medical Tourism, and the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment. Sustainable Tourism initiatives, aligned with the 'Tourism for All' framework, have fostered environmental conservation, community engagement, and inclusive economic growth.
Zanzibar's rising global reputation has been further solidified through international recognition. The islands have garnered six major awards from globally acclaimed platforms, solidifying their position as one of Africa's most attractive and rapidly growing tourism destinations. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the industry, signifying not only recovery from past global crises but also the establishment of a robust and expanding sector with promising long-term prospects.
With November and December figures yet to be released, the authorities anticipate further strengthening Zanzibar's position as a leading tourism hub in Africa. This record achievement is a testament to the island's appeal, stability, and the successful implementation of strategic initiatives, paving the way for a bright future in the tourism industry.
